Deconstruction of an existing AS film opening

Retribution
From watching this film opening I have identified it to be a Thriller

  • The opening titles are set on a dull and dingy concrete walls with elements of industrial features.
  • The typography layered on top has been stylised to look like blood.
  • The typography doesn't fit in completely with the opening.
  • For a film in the genre of thriller I expect the titles to be more sharp and clean cut.
  • The titles alone are not the best and quite poorly attempted.
  • Non diegetic music is used throughout however has some breaks.
  • The non-diegetic music consists of synthesisers which are on a constant loop until it fades out into another non-diegetic piece of music which synth orientated further into the sequence when the victim enters the building the original piece of music returns.
  • The non-diegetic synth music is face paced and does create tension however doesn't maintain a steady flow.
  • Throughout the film opening there is the use of some diegetic sounds such as the heavy breathing in the POV and as well as footsteps and a scream in the final scene of the opening.
  • Throughout the film opening there was a range of shots used such as close ups, long shots and mid shots
  • In the opening they incorporated in the POVs of the antagonist chasing after his victim. Which was interesting as you never saw the villain's identity
  • Their use of camera movements are very limited and only use POVs.
  • Within the sequence they did use the angles usefully by using high angles to show the girl's vulnerability. However didn't use many.

  • In the terms of the film opening's editing it was very simple.
  • They display a simple understanding of editing with straight cuts and fading transitions
  • The opening was fairly face paced which is expected of a film in the genre of thriller.
  • The cuts were fairly quick but weren't fast enough to give the opening

  • The teenager girl is dressed in a typical casual attire which can relate to the target audience being roughly 15-20.
  • As for the villain the are dressed in black and unidentifiable through the use of a hooded jumper/jacket.
  • To complete this mysterious black look they should have completed the outfit with black shoes.

  • The choice of weapon for the villain was a knife. Which ties into the thriller genre, as it is typical to use identifiable weapons.
  • Some of the locations were more carefully selected than others.
  • The isolated look was not complete due to the people walking in the background in the earlier shots.
  • However the concrete building area was well chosen due to the dark and eerie tone

  • Natural daylight was used mostly throughout.
  • There was also use of artificial light coming from the victim's phone.
  • Usually in thriller films the lighting is low key and well as having an extensive use of shadows.

  • Overall, the film opening sequence was fairly appropriate for the thriller genre.
  •  It had fast paced tense music and was primarily based around a problem where the protagonist must escape.
  •  It also captured  a few elements of suspension in the chase.
  • Thrillers are primarily a villain driven plot and the sequence captures this.
  • The target audience for this sequence would be roughly 15 to 20 year olds (15+ rating).
  •  There is no violence in this sequence but there is the use of weapons which implies there is to be some.
  • The opening would appeal to it's target audience with the choice of character as the victim is young female who dresses casual yet fairly on trend to a typical teenager.
